A new self-forming material available in a range of sections allows gaskets to be fabricated in-situ for high temperature and high pressure applications. Introduced by Garlock Sealing Technologies, GRAPH-LOCK ® Joint Sealant helps to avoid costly downtime associated with prefabricated gaskets.

GRAPH-LOCK ® Joint Sealant is a stainless steel foil and carbon fibre reinforced yarn encapsulated in graphite. Available in lengths of 8 Mtrs and 15 Mtrs and supplied on convenient spools, GRAPH-LOCK ® Joint Sealant is designed to be applied to a sealing face and joined with a skive cut – even gasket ribs can be made by overlapping joints and pressing together.

A highly compressible material that never hardens or dries, sections are available as square semi-round and rectangular with standard sizes ranging from 1/8” square to 1” x ¼”. On compression a homogeneous mass forms at the joint providing a highly efficient seal at temperatures up to 1,000°C and pressures up to 310 bar.

Typical applications include shell and tube heat exchangers, particularly where they are positioned in confined spaces. GRAPH-LOCK ® Joint Sealant avoids the need to remove the tube bundle as there is no need to pass the tubes through the gasket as with conventional metallic gaskets. Removal of the head and slackening of the tubesheet to access the shell seal face is generally all that is required saving many hours of plant down time.

Warped and pitted faces are accommodated by GRAPH-LOCK ® Joint Sealant as its high compressibility allows deformability. In addition to its ability to be re-used up to 3 or 4 times, inventory costs can also be reduced by holding stocks of the joint sealant rather than different sizes of metallic seal.

Garlock strengthens UK industry position with Wide Range acquisition

Sealing technology business, Garlock (Great Britain) Limited, has acquired Wide Range Elastomers Limited, a precision moulder and fabricator of rubber products, based in Leicester. Garlock’s third UK acquisition over the past twelve months brings it extensive aerospace knowledge and specialist manufacturing resources.
With a focus primarily on the aerospace sector and a solid reputation for high quality products, Wide Range has supplier approvals in place with manufacturers including GE Aviation, Bombardier, BAE Systems and Airbus. The company’s fabric reinforced airframe seals and variety of canopy and cockpit seal extrusions complement Garlock’s existing range of products used in the aerospace sector.

Seal elastomer compound inhibits micro-organism growth and kills germs

Results from tests carried out by the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hospital Hygiene at Phillipps University Marburg, in Germany, have illustrated that BIO-GUARDIAN® elastomer compound has a significant germ reduction and growth inhibition effect on bacteria such as E. coli and MRSA. Developed by Garlock Sealing Technologies, BIO-GUARDIAN® is a mouldable compound incorporating silver ions (Ag2+) and is already available in the Garlock CEFIL’AIR® inflatable seals range.

In production environments where low germ count is essential, such as the food and pharmaceutical industries, biostatic growth inhibition is critical. Measured against a controlled test to Japanese standard JIS L 1902:1998,2002, BIO-GUARDIAN® met food sector requirements with reduction rates of three to four log 10 levels for tested species including E. coli, MRSA and VRE.

CEFIL’AIR ®BIO-GUARDIAN® seals provide an ideal sealing solution for irregular moving surfaces such as door or lid type closures. The inflatable design of the seal allows it to be deflated and inflated as required to provide a secure seal between two surfaces. BIO-GUARDIAN® seal elastomer will withstand temperatures from -100°C to 250°C and pressures from 0.5 to 10.4 bar in a wide range of liquid or gaseous media.

Applications for CEFIL’AIR BIO-GUARDIAN® have included sealing access points for clean room entry – where the door seal becomes exposed to an external environment its ability to reduce germs and prevent micro-organism development helps to maintain clean room integrity. In addition to growth inhibition properties the CEFIL’AIR inflatable seal technology completely fills irregular gaps between the clean room door and its frame.

Garlock expands services with gasket fabricating resource

Recent acquisitions by Garlock (Great Britain) Ltd have seen it claim the position of largest industrial gasket cutter in the UK. Garlock, the sealing technology business, is now manufacturing in the UK using its own wide range of high specification materials to provide customers with custom fabricated gaskets.

NGM, acquired November 2008, and PTM (UK), earlier this year, have merged their respective manufacturing resources within Garlock providing it with a significant capability. As part of the investment strategy, Garlock is implementing its group-wide ‘Lean’ methodology, “Total Customer Value”, with a focus on the requirements of providing a flexible response to its customers throughout its operational and administrative processes.

Garlock’s gasket fabricating service provides a bespoke service meeting the requirements of customers from single to volume call-offs. Four flat bed CNC machines, using abrasive water jet technologies, together with CAD/CAM beam press capability ensure short lead times can be met cost effectively.

In addition Garlock is able to offer rubber moulding and engineered textile facilities and is increasingly becoming part of the customer value chain. Stuart Phythian, Managing Director, Garlock (Great Britain) Limited, explains, “We now have a significant capability offering customers the flexibility of completely engineered solutions designed and manufactured in the UK while drawing on Garlock’s global engineering and manufacturing resources.

Garlock expands UK operation with manufacturing acquisition

The acquisition is an important strategic investment for Garlock as it gears up its UK operation for growth.

Fit for life? metallic seals keep the ice out

‘Fit for purpose’ for a seal on the venting system of a superconducting magnet of an MRI body scanner means it must maintain an absolute seal for the life of the scanner. One of the issues here is that scanners don’t tend to wear out – they just keep on going.
Siemens Magnet Technology based near Oxford in the UK, is a world leader in the design and manufacture of superconducting magnets for MRI body scanners and is at the forefront of development to improve efficiency and drive down costs.
Sealing the helium venting system of the superconducting magnet is critically important to avoid the ingress of air into the magnet. Sealing is required to prevent helium gas escaping but more importantly to avoid air from getting in. Air within the helium venting vessel creates ice; it can block the venting system making it unsafe and can make scanner performance unreliable.
Superconducting magnet technology allows dramatic reduction in size compared to conventional electromagnets by using superconducting wires immersed in liquid helium at -269° Celsius. The reduced power requirement is what makes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) economically viable.
Working closely with Garlock Sealing Technologies, Siemens addressed the potential leak issue in this area by using Garlock HELICOFLEX^®metallic seals and the QDS clamping system. Replacing PTFE seals and conventional clamps removed a potential risk area.
Tony Puffer, Business Excellence Manager, Siemens, comments, “What we’re trying to do all the time is to improve our product’s performance, efficiency and cut its cost. For example the magnet’s length has reduced from 2.4 Mts in the eighties to its current 1.2 Mts. This provides patients with a much friendlier ‘open’ scanner unit.
“This evolution sees us continuously pushing the technological boundaries, but also requires us to consider system life cycle costs. Air ingress has to be prevented, while at the same time a cost effective service solution needs to be provided.” Garlock’s HELICOFLEX^®seals are positioned on the inlet and outlets of the venting system and using industry standard NW25 flanges and Garlock QDS flange clamps allows components to be removed quickly for service or repair.
The sealing concept of HELICOFLEX^®is based on plastic deformation of a metallic lining. Available in a selection of lining materials, selected on the basis that it needs to have better plasticity than the flange material, seal deformation is controlled by compressing an internal [to the seal material] spring.
The Garlock QDS clamps maintain high levels of joint integrity while allowing quick connection and disconnection of pipework. Supplied with two conical flanges, a HELICOFLEX^® seal and an articulated collar, the QDS clamping collar offers excellent mechanical efficiency. Each collar set is designed to provide optimum distribution of tightening force by adapting the rollers to a corresponding flange diameter.
Tony Puffer continues, “We don’t expect any one area of the venting system to create a problem but if one should occur then the QDS clamps help to reduce downtime. We look for components that are fit for purpose and reliability is the key – with scanners operating around 20 hours per day and with loaded schedules any down time has horrendous associated costs and lost revenue.
“With this seal development, and ongoing developments into new areas, Garlock has worked closely with us providing know-how and producing special seals to meet our requirements. We’re pushing the technology boundaries hard all the time and it’s essential we use the specialist knowledge of our suppliers.”

General purpose gasketing material gives more for less

Garlock’s re-launched BLUE-GARD® Style 3000 gasketing material now has WRc approval for use in water industry applications. Value engineering, following a review of its manufacturing process, allows Garlock to competitively price the material and increase its cost effectiveness.

BLUE-GARD® is a general purpose, asbestos-free, gasketing sheet manufactured from a blend of aramid fibres and elastomeric binders. The material allows good recovery rates ensuring high levels of torque retention. High efficiency sealing – Nitrogen gas 0.6 ml/hr – makes BLUE-GARD® ideal for gas and steam where joint integrity is essential.

Used for many years in the nuclear industry for site services steam, the well proven gasketing material now meets all the requirements of BS7531 Grade Y allowing a maximum temperature of 370°C and a maximum pressure of 70 bar.

The newly awarded Water Industries WRc approval to BS6290 will see BLUE-GARD® appearing in the industries’ ‘Water Fittings and Materials Directory’.

Quick disconnect system provides high joint integrity for fluid or gas

A system which maintains high levels of joint integrity, while allowing quick connection and disconnection of pipe work, is now available from Garlock (Great Britain) Limited. Designed for connecting conical flanges on pipe work from 18mm diameter to 410mm diameter, Garlock’s Quick Disconnect System (QDS) allows fast and easy installation and removal of equipment from process or test applications.

Supplied with two conical flanges, a HELICOFLEX® seal and an articulated collar, the QDS is available in four classifications – Class 150 a non-magnetic lightweight coupling allowing tightening up to 150N/mm – Class 300 for low pressure applications – Class 500 for medium pressures and Class 1,000 for high pressure and temperature applications including steam.

The QDS clamping collar offers excellent mechanical efficiency. Each collar set has been designed to provide optimum distribution of tightening force by adapting the rollers to a corresponding flange diameter.

For applications where automatic coupling and disconnection are required, for example in radioactive environments, Garlock has developed a QDS and HELICOFLEX® seal suitable for remote handling. The inherent design of QDS makes it particularly suitable for remote handling applications as no twisting torque is applied to the connections.

Garlock is able to provide detailed technical data to support selection regarding temperature relative to pressure limitations. Up to 400°C can be used with the QDS.

Sealing solution removes the need to machine worn flanges

A deformable structure seal is saving process businesses hundreds of hours in downtime by removing the need for machining damaged and worn joint flanges. Designed and manufactured by Garlock Sealing Technologies the HELICOFLEX® range of OMICRON seals provides a proprietary solution to maintaining joint integrity.

Working on the sealing principle of plastic deformation, the outer material of the seal is more ductile than the flange face material. The seal outer material encloses a close wound, oval shaped helical spring. This internal spring resists compression and causes the outer ‘sealing’ material to deform and permanently contact the flange sealing surfaces.

Dependent on the process HELICOFLEX® OMICRON seals are available in a range of jacket (contact) materials including aluminium, mild steel, nickel and stainless steel. When specified as original equipment the seal’s mechanical and material properties protect flange faces from wear, resist corrosion, radiation and extremes of temperature.

Operating temperatures of -269°C to 750°C and sealing levels of up to 1,000 bar for liquids and gas leak rates of <10-8 Atm cm3/s make the range suitable for a wide range of applications including – process lines, boilers, reforming pipe, corrosive gases, nuclear and petrochemical industry.

HELICOFLEX® OMICRON seals are available from Garlock (Great Britain) Ltd in standard ISO PN and Flange Classes. Mean diameter sizes up to 692mm are stocked with larger diameters available on request.

Multi-Swell? Gasket Creates Own Load, Dramatically Increases Reliability

Garlock Sealing Technologies, a leader in fluid sealing technology for more than 100 years, has launched MULTI-SWELL™, a proprietary new gasketing material. The world’s first self-loading general service gasket, MULTI-SWELL creates its own load when it comes into contact with oil or water, virtually eliminating the most common cause of gasket failure – insufficient load.

This revolutionary new material performs equally well in oil or water, does not degrade in contact with oils, and adapts easily to all types of flange designs, making MULTI-SWELL an ideal gasket for a broad range of other applications –– all at a cost comparable to conventional gasket materials. As it seals flanges in less than perfect conditions, minimizing maintenance, MULTI-SWELL is particularly well-suited for MRO applications.

“More than 70% of all gasket failures are due to lack of load,” said Tim Hurley, Garlock product manager. “MULTI-SWELL generates and maintains its own load. It works well even in combination with flanges in poor condition or flanges designed for soft, low performance gaskets.”

Twice as soft as conventional gaskets, MULTI-SWELL is easy to cut and readily conformable even to irregular flanges, ensuring tight seals with lower loads. MULTI-SWELL features extremely high crush strength and can be safely installed in applications that would typically crush elastomeric gaskets. In applications such as transmissions and air conditioning systems, where vibration often causes bolt load loss or where load loss occurs because of bolt relaxation, MULTI-SWELL counters that loss to prevent leakage and weeping. Because it performs well under low load conditions, MULTI-SWELL can be used with confidence even with plastic or cast iron flanges.

MULTI-SWELL is both environment-friendly and budget-friendly. Using MULTI-SWELL actually reduces the expenses associated with vegetable fiber and cork gaskets. Cork and vegetable fiber gaskets’ capillary leak paths require the use of absorbent oil pads, create oil loss and safety issues, and sometimes necessitate expensive water treatment when leakage occurs. The use of MULTI-SWELL eliminates these costs and environmental risks.

Garlock Acquires Syntron� RP Mechanical Seal Line

Palmyra, New York April 13, 2007 – Garlock Klozure®, a Division of Garlock Sealing Technologies, announced that it has acquired the Syntron RP Mechanical Seal line from FMC Technologies, Inc.

“The Syntron acquisition extends Garlock Klozure’s dynamic sealing portfolio for today’s industrial process market,” says Tim Magill, Product Manager. “While growing the breadth of our dynamic sealing products, this mechanical seal fits well with our strategic direction.”

The Syntron RP seal is a small, cartridge-type, double seal used to seal fluids and gases on various rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors, and mixers. The seal itself is constructed of brass or stainless steel, with flexible drive rings and lapped seal faces.

“Garlock Klozure provides critically important fluid sealing solutions to core industrial markets. Sealing technology specialist, Garlock, has introduced a new sealing material for its KLOZURE® range of high performance dynamic seals. KLOZURE MILL-RIGHT® is a specially engineered elastomer, available in three grades, which has been shown to offer up to 90% increased abrasion resistance over conventional lip seal material.

As any dynamic lip seal is subject to wear the reduced abrasive properties of MILL-RIGHT® assures reduced mean time between repair (MTBR) and longer bearing life. The low coefficient of friction offered by the material means less heat generated and lower power consumption with a resultant higher equipment efficiency.

Colour coded for easy identification, MILL-RIGHT® N, replacing conventional nitrile material, is black and is suitable for continuous temperatures of 200ºF and peaks of 250ºF. MILL-RIGHT® ES, replacing Hydrogenated Nitrile material, is blue and is suitable for continuous temperatures of 300ºF and peaks of 350ºF. Palmyra, New York– As the first major component of the Palmyra Modernization Project at Garlock Sealing Technologies, the recently completed 114,000-square-foot Garlock Klozure building is a state-of-the-art example of energy efficiency. In addition, new production equipment is scheduled to be phased in over the next three years that will improve energy conservation and save energy dollars. A portion of the funding for these initiatives came from a $150,000 grant provided by New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG).

Move In for New Garlock Klozure Facility Begins

Palmyra, NY, December 15, 2006 – As the first major component of the Palmyra Modernization Project at Garlock Sealing Technologies nears completion, employees and retirees took time over this past week to mark the occasion with some celebrating. Garlock executives and managers served a holiday meal to over 500 individuals in the new 100,000 square foot Garlock Klozure building. A special dessert reception was held for retirees.

“The employee holiday meal is a Garlock tradition,” said Paul Baldetti, president of Garlock Sealing Technologies. “Holding it in the new Garlock Klozure building made sense as we celebrate its completion and honor the ongoing commitment of Garlock employees to make the Palmyra campus a world-class facility.”

With equipment being moved in from now through the first quarter of 2007, the facility is expected to be fully operational by April. The building will be used for manufacturing high performance Garlock Klozure^®oil seals, bearing isolators, and mechanical seals.

Garlock Introduces Multi-Layer Graphite GRAPH-LOCK� 3128 Hochdruck� Gaskets

These innovative gaskets offer better handling and greater safety than other metal-inserted graphite sheet products. They also handle high pressure better than standard graphite gaskets because of reduced load loss and unparalleled torque retention – so they’re ideal for replacing spiral wound gaskets and Kammprofile gaskets in many applications.

Hochdruck – which is German for “high-pressure” – gaskets cut more easily than other graphite sheet and eject from gasket cutting dies more easily. They’re also much safer: they resist being drawn out by the gasket cutting die, so they don’t cut user’s fingers and hands like standard stainless steel foil reinforced graphite gaskets.

Hochdruck’s bonding agent reduces leaks by 2.5 times compared to competitive gaskets: it increases the graphite-to-graphite strength ratio and greatly improves sealability. They seal reliably and easily under moderate bolt load – and maintain that tight seal even during pressure fluctuations.

Garlock Klozure® is proud to announce the release of the new XPS™ cartridge mechanical seal, the first truly Serviceable in Place mechanical seal in the industry.

Garlock Klozure’s new XPS seal is the industry’s first serviceable in place mechanical seal. Unlike traditional mechanical seals that house a single set of sealing faces, the XPS houses a series of sealing elements with some deployed and others held in reserve for future use. New elements can be deployed in a mater of seconds when a problem arises to allow users to continue their operation with minimal interruption. This represents a significant value for the user by not having to stop critical or expensive processes to perform a seal repair.

In addition to being serviceable in place, the XPS is one of the few mechanical seals in the world capable of running dry. The XPS sealing elements are capable of running totally dry for extended periods of time offering breakthrough industry protection during upset conditions! No more worrying if your traditional seal will be damaged due to a valve being shut or a tank empty - the XPS can handle it.

With the rebuild kit available on any XPS, the seal can also be fully reconditioned on site in under an hour at a fraction of the cost of conventional mechanical seals. With the XPS there is no need to send the seal back to a repair facility to get faces re-lapped or parts rebuilt.

Garlock Sealing Technologies is currently undergoing a complete modernization of their global headquarters. The most profound benefit, however, may be in store for its global authorized distributor network and customer base.

Garlock has dubbed this massive initiative “PMP” - an acronym for “Palmyra Modernization Project.”

Over the next five years, Garlock will invest at least $35 million in the PMP initiative involving the demolition of most existing structures and construction of new, more efficient facilities. The project will reduce the number of buildings from 26 to seven and eliminate 350,000 square feet of obsolete space, or half of the space currently under roof.

Tanged graphite gasket material seals aggressive chemicals under extreme conditions

A pure exfoliated graphite sheet gasket material providing high levels of sealability in extreme conditions is now available from Garlock (Great Britain) Limited. Graph-Lock® 3125-TC is reinforced with 316 Stainless Steel tang inserts which provide increased mechanical properties of the gasket.

Graph-Lock® 3125 TC offers a high level of resistance to aggressive chemicals and its ability to withstand high pressures and extreme temperatures, up to 650°C in steam, makes it ideal for a wide range of applications.

Laminated from compressed layers of purified natural graphite flake, and mechanically bonded with the stainless steel tangs, ensures the material retains dimensional stability in high temperatures. In addition the material seals easily under moderate bolt loads offering torque retention through service and sealing tightly even during pressure fluctuations.

Supplied in sheet or finished gasket form, Graph-Lock® 3125 TC is available in thicknesses from 1.5 mm to 3 mm and is suitable for fitting with eyelets. All material is clearly branded ‘Garlock’ providing a solution to traceability certification requirements.
